The right cylinder for your Liverpool home depends on your property type, water pressure and hot water demand. We advise at the free survey.
A vented (or open-vented) cylinder is fed from a cold water storage tank in the loft. Common in Liverpool's older Victorian and Edwardian properties. Operates at low pressure and is simple to maintain. A good choice for properties where the existing loft tank system is working correctly and mains pressure hot water is not required.
An unvented cylinder is fed directly from the mains supply, delivering hot water at mains pressure throughout the property. Much better shower performance. No cold water tank needed in the loft. Ideal for larger Liverpool properties with multiple bathrooms. Must be installed by a G3 qualified engineer under Building Regulations Part G. All our engineers are G3 qualified.
A direct cylinder uses an electric immersion heater as its primary or sole heat source. Common in all-electric properties or as a backup heating method. Useful during boiler repairs or as a solar thermal storage cylinder. We fit immersion heaters from £150 and supply direct cylinders from £500.
An indirect cylinder is heated by the central heating boiler via a heat exchanger coil inside the cylinder. The most common type in Liverpool homes with system or regular boilers. Usually also has an immersion heater as a backup. We supply and fit indirect cylinders in both vented and unvented configurations.
Most Liverpool homes with system or regular boilers rely on a hot water cylinder. These are the signs that replacement is due.
If your household regularly exhausts the hot water before everyone has showered, the cylinder is undersized for your current demand. A larger cylinder or an unvented system delivers more hot water to more outlets simultaneously.
A leaking cylinder must be replaced. Cylinders cannot be repaired once the tank itself has failed. A small drip from a valve or fitting can sometimes be resolved without replacing the cylinder. We diagnose which is the case on the visit.
A cylinder that takes more than 30 to 45 minutes to reheat after being used usually has a failing immersion heater element, a corroded heat exchanger coil or a faulty thermostat. We diagnose the cause before recommending replacement.
Most hot water cylinders have a working life of 15 to 25 years. An older cylinder is likely losing efficiency, may have internal corrosion and is at greater risk of failure. Proactive replacement avoids an emergency and the water damage that can follow a sudden cylinder failure.
If hot water pressure is poor in your Liverpool home despite good cold water pressure, the issue is usually the cylinder type. Moving from a vented system to an unvented cylinder eliminates this problem and delivers mains-pressure hot water to every outlet in the house.
Banging or kettling from the cylinder or its pipework indicates limescale build-up on the immersion heater element or heat exchanger, or air in the system. Often resolved with an element replacement before full cylinder replacement is needed.
Not sure whether your cylinder needs repair or replacement? We diagnose on the visit before recommending any work.
CALL 07399 676656Unvented hot water cylinder installation is a legally regulated activity. It cannot be carried out by a general plumber without the specific G3 qualification.
Under Building Regulations Part G, the installation of an unvented hot water cylinder must be carried out by a competent person holding the G3 qualification or notified to Building Control. An unvented cylinder operates at mains pressure with water temperatures up to 65 degrees. Without correctly installed and tested safety devices, including a temperature and pressure relief valve, an expansion vessel and a tundish, the cylinder can become a serious safety risk.
All our engineers who install unvented cylinders hold the G3 qualification. Every unvented installation is notified to Building Control on completion and you receive a completion certificate. Do not allow any plumber to install an unvented cylinder without verifying their G3 qualification first. An incorrectly installed unvented cylinder is dangerous and uninsured.
Both vented and unvented cylinder installations covered by our own qualified engineers. All unvented installations notified to Building Control on completion.

A combi boiler heats water on demand and requires no cylinder. Ideal for smaller Liverpool properties with one bathroom. Larger properties with multiple bathrooms or higher hot water demand benefit from a system boiler with an unvented cylinder, which delivers mains-pressure hot water to multiple outlets simultaneously without running out.
