A vented (or open-vented) cylinder is fed from a cold water tank in the loft. Common in Liverpool's older homes. It runs at low pressure and is simple to look after. A good pick for homes where the loft tank still works fine and mains-pressure hot water is not needed.
An unvented cylinder is fed straight from the mains water supply. It gives mains-pressure hot water across the whole home. Much better shower flow. No cold water tank in the loft. What size hot water cylinder do you need? It depends on the home, the number of bathrooms and the people who live there. Here is a rough guide.
130 litres works for a small flat with one bathroom and one or two people. Smaller cylinder. Faster to reheat. Fits in tight airing cupboard spaces.
200 litres works for a 2-bed home with one bathroom and two or three people. The most common size in Liverpool homes. Pairs well with a standard heating system.
250 litres works for a 3-bed home with one or two bathrooms and three to four people. The sweet spot for most family homes in Liverpool.
300 litres or more for big 4-bed and 5-bed homes with multiple bathrooms. Or homes with a high hot water demand. Allows long showers without running out.

Most hot water cylinders last 15 to 25 years. An older one likely loses energy through the walls. Rust inside is more likely. And the risk of a sudden split rises. A planned swap avoids the water damage from a burst.
